On Friday, March 1st, the students at Nemaha Central celebrated Pi Day a few days early. Pi Day has been a tradition at NCEMS for many years and all of the students seem to have a blast. They started the day off with the middle school students making pies with grandparents and grandfriends in the cafeteria. The middle schoolers really enjoyed making pies and spending time with grandfriends. “It was so much fun and I enjoyed doing this with my grandma. I’m sad this is our last year to do this.” said 8th grader, Bailey Snyder.
One of the activities that all grade levels participated in throughout the week, was the Pi Day Coin War. Each grade level had a coin jar in their classroom. They were challenged to bring coins to put in their class's jar. Coins in their jar counted as positive towards their class total. They could also bring bills to place in other class's buckets. The bills counted as a negative toward their class total. This meant that students could sabotage other classes! This year, the proceeds went to the Haverkamp Family to help support them after losing their home to a fire.
Later on in the day, the 7th and 8th graders led the younger grades in various Pi Day activities such as Pi Day bracelets, circumference measuring activities, Pi Day paintings, and more. They ended the day with a fun assembly that included all of the grades to attend. Mrs. Griffith, NCMS Math Teacher, led the assembly by getting students excited to hear what grades placed in the Pi Day Coin War from the week. Each grade level that placed, got the opportunity to have a few of their students Pie an 8th grader in the face in front of the whole audience. 3rd Grade was the 1st place winner for this activity!
NCEMS students and staff look forward to this event every year and they always have such a good time with all of the activities involved. Great job, everyone!
